Qualifications

Providing financial advice and portfolio management for other people's money is a profession that demands high standards.  Not least of which are honesty and integrity.  Of course there are the various licensing qualifications as well, which are listed at the end of this section.

There is also the constant flow of information along with periodic programs and seminars to continually enhance one’s professional capabilities.  And then there are the years of experience which can certainly provide many educational lessons on the ways of the financial markets.

In the case of John Tarnow, Charter Asset Management’s financial advisor and portfolio manager, those experiences reach back to 1984 when he first became a financial advisor with then E.F. Hutton & Co.  After multiple corporate mergers and name changes, he left what had become Morgan Stanley Smith Barney to bring those lessons learned to the service of his Charter Asset Management clients.

And there certainly was no shortage of lessons to be learned during that period of time.  A period that includes the stock market crash of 1987, the technology bubble of the 1990’s followed by the bear market of 2000 to 2002, and then the subsequent housing bubble which helped contribute to the 2007 to 2009 bear market in stocks and concurrent financial crisis of 2008 and early 2009.  Also occurring during that same time span were a number of cyclical bond bear markets where rather sharply rising interest rates caused bond values to decline rather noticeably before stabilizing and/or reversing.

The lessons learned from those experiences can provide valuable perspective in assisting clients with their respective investment strategies.  One such strategy is the personally managed discretionary fee-based account, which John Tarnow has been involved with since 1995.
